‘In drawing, in remembrance’ follows communities in coastal Pakistan who employ various drawing practices to confront displacement and infrastructural violence. Drawing is simultaneously a medium of measurement and expression, enclosure and restoration; for the local communities of the Delta region, it is also a mystical Islamic device of navigation and recovery during crisis. Grounded in collaboration and field research, Rajani portrays these approaches to drawing in two recent video works by layering the stories of fishers, painters, elders and activists.
Four Acts of Recovery (2025) is a meditative documentary that depicts how a fisher family uprooted from the Indus River Delta attempts to recover their ties to their disappearing homeland. Exhibited for the first time, Lines That World a River (2025) is a video essay that engages with activists and elders to enact a critique of the political and capitalist forces that are damaging the river ecologies of Karachi.
Alongside the two artworks, the exhibition also adopts images, sound, and objects from the region to embody the processes of retracing and recovery explored by Rajani in her works. The exhibition thus encourages visitors to embark on a journey of remembrance, and further reflect on the common vulnerability and endurance across communities and geographies.
